Heya folks!

Long time no journal, eh? Haven't really had time to write about anything, I started in a new school last fall and life has been pretty hectic since. I'm not here to give you my biography of the last semester however, I'm pretty sure no one would actually give a damn. I'm here with an enquiry instead, something that I'm curious about hearing your input and thoughts.

To give a bit of background, I'll try to keep it short - I'm currently working on a summer project at school, a game for pre-school aged children for a client, I'm the character artist in our team. The style is very cutesy and cartoony, thick black lines and solid colors with simple cell shading and similar high lights. I recently considered and today discussed with an older student about instead of doing the work free-hand with a brush, I could use vectors instead. The style is very vector-like, and with them I could achieve the same if not an even cleaner result probably a lot quicker and easier than with how I'm currently working. I've however decided against vectors mainly because of my immense dislike of them, even if I do acknowledge their usefulness and how much easier they would make my work in the long run. Well, the work doesn't take too long as it is, but at least it'd make scaling and such a lot easier. I just enjoy my current way of working a lot more than if I was using vectors, and no one in my team is requiring that I use vectors, so I'd much rather keep on doing what I've been doing than use tools that I know will frustrate me to no end.

That got a bit long, sorry bout that. Now, the actual enquiry I came here with, is mostly for professional artist but any input is appreciated - what would you do? As in, if you were working on a project and using a certain work method that you can enjoy, and then realized there was a way to get the work done easier than that and get the same if not better results using a method you despise, how would you proceed? Would you keep doing what you enjoy more, or would you sacrifice that enjoyment for convenience and possibly better results? Even if the finished product would go to a paying customer? What would you perceive as the right way of working, or the right mentality to approach such issue?

I might switch to vectors later on, I might not, I'm not sure yet. I understand the benefits of working with vectors, and like I said they would go well with the style we're going with, but spending 7-8 hours a day working with a method I just don't enjoy using does not sound appealing to me. Anyway, there you have it. I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter, I'm curious to hear what other people think. Convenience over enjoyment, or vice versa, in professional work/client projects? :> Please comment and share your thoughts!

Thanks for reading, I'll catch ya'll next time!
